Understanding PCOS & Hormonal Skin

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can be associated with higher androgen activity, which may contribute to increased facial or body hair growth, acne and changes in oil production. Experiences vary considerably: not everyone with PCOS has the same symptoms, and unwanted hair or persistent acne can also have causes other than PCOS. This page explains aesthetic support; it does not diagnose or treat the underlying hormonal condition.

For unwanted facial or body hair, laser hair reduction may be an option for suitable hair and skin types. It usually requires a course of sessions, and because PCOS can continue to stimulate hair growth, results may be less predictable and maintenance may be needed. Fine or light-coloured hair may not respond well, and a consultation and patch test where indicated are important. The practitioner should assess the hair, skin tone, medical history and medicines before deciding whether laser is appropriate.

PCOS can also be associated with acne, oiliness and post-inflammatory marks. Depending on your skin, selected facials, chemical peels or suitable home-care products may support the appearance of these concerns, but they do not address the hormonal cause. Strong exfoliants or aggressive treatment may aggravate irritated skin, so a tailored approach is important.

If you suspect you have PCOS, or your hair growth or acne has changed noticeably, seek advice from an appropriate healthcare professional. Medical management may help address underlying symptoms, while Bavary Clinic can discuss aesthetic options for suitable concerns. We will explain realistic outcomes, limitations and aftercare, without promising to cure PCOS or permanently prevent hormonal hair growth.
